University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) was founded in 1964, on the initiative of the figures and the Regional Chairman of Muhammadiyah Malang. At the beginning of UMM is a branch of the University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta, which was established by the Foundation University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta by the Notary R. Sihojo Wongsowidjojo in Jakarta No. 71 tang-gal June 19, 1963.At that time, UMM has 3 (three) faculties, namely (1) Faculty of Economics, (2) Faculty of Law, and (3) the Faculty of Education (Guidance and Counseling) Department of Religious Education. The third is the status of Registered faculty of the Department of Education and Culture, Directorate General of Higher Education in 1966 by Decree No. 68 / B-SWT / p / 1966 dated December 30, 1966.On July 1st 1968 the University of Muhammadiyah Malang became an official university stand-alone (separate from the University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta), whose implementation is in the hands of the Foundation University of Muhammadiyah Malang, by the Notary R. Thus, at that UMM has four faculties. In addition, the Department of Religious Education FKIP enroll as the Faculty of Religion under the auspices of the Department of Religion under the name Faculty of MT.In 1970 the Faculty of MT gaining equal status with the College of Islamic Studies (IAIN), the Minister of Religious Affairs Decree No. 50 of 1970. In the same year the Faculty of Social Welfare changed its name to the Faculty of Social Sciences with the Department of Social Welfare. Then in 1975 the Faculty is officially independent (separate from the University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta) with Registered Decree No. 022 A / 1/1975 dated April 16, 1975.Faculty were then added to the Faculty of Engineering, namely in 1977. In 1980 it opened the Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Animal Husbandry then followed. Between 1983 to 1993, added new majors and improved status suudah majors there. The latter, in 1993 UMM opened Graduate Program Master of Management and Master of Rural Sociology. Until this 1994/1995 academic year, UMM has had 9 faculties and 25 departments / courses strata Si, two courses strata-S2, and a college / strata-D3 Nursing. In the span of thirty years of traveling UMM (1964- 1994), the most significant development was started in 1983's. From that moment onwards UMM record very impressive growth, both in the field of improving the status of the Department, the administrative reform, the addition of facilities and campus facilities, as well as adding and improving the quality of management (administrative and academic). In 2009, UMM combines the Faculty of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry and Fisheries into the Faculty of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry to fit the consortium Agricultural Sciences.In the field of physical facilities and academic facilities, now available three campuses: Campus I in Jalan Bandung No. 1, Campus II at Jalan Dam Sutami No. 188a, and Campus III (Integrated Campus) on Highway Tlogo Mas. In the area of ​​increasing the quantity and quality of academic personnel, has been carried out (1) recruitment of young teachers from various leading universities in Java, (2) Improving the quality of the lecturers by sending them for further studies (S2 and S3) in as well as abroad. Thanks to the struggle that knows no stopping this, so now UMM has been transformed in the direction of higher education alternatives.
